One of the biggest struggles of my life had been the journey to discovering how to love myself. I have no issues in showing love to others, doing for others, or giving of my time to serve others. But what I have found is that in the process of caring for others, I neglect my own needs. In fact, I was an expert in putting myself last. What I have also discovered, is that most everyone does this.
But what I have realized, is that I was not alone in putting myself last. When we treat ourselves in this way, we open the door for all kinds of other problems. We may begin to suffer with our physical health, emotional health, and carry too much stress. Eventually, we forget to even acknowledge our own needs. And we forget that we are a person who is deserving of having their wants, needs, and dreams fulfilled. For many years, I was so busy taking care of my family that I neglected myself. But eventually, your body will let you know that you need attention. Even if that means taking the time to treat the parts that have broken due to neglect.
It is important to take care of yourself. It is not selfish. It is necessary. Because to take care of others, you need to be healthy and whole. But the most important thing is, you need to love yourself enough to understand that if you need time to de-stress, do it. Love yourself to do something that you enjoy. Love yourself enough to put your needs first.
