Sometimes, when we have an event happen to us, it is a breakthrough and we don’t even realize it. Today, my daughter had one of these events. She works as a CNA, or Certified Nursing Assistant, while she is trying to become a nurse. Her path has not been easy. In her life, she has suffered from Dyslexia and severe Anxiety. Every accomplishment has been accompanied by tremendous effort and struggle for her.
Anxiety has been the biggest struggle of her life. I have seen fear paralyze her and prevent her from having success. As a Mom, it has been painful to watch her struggle. But she amazes me in her ability to pick herself up and keep going. She remains kind and caring even when she is knocked down.
When she told me she wanted to be a nurse, I wondered if her anxiety would get in her way. I worried that maybe the stress would be too much for her. But as she has worked as a CNA, I have seen tremendous growth and maturity with her. She works long hours at a thankless job that most people couldn’t handle, including myself. She comes home exhausted from being on her feet all day. She tells me things that caused her stress and fills me in on how her patients are doing. Tonight, she had a different story. Tonight, she helped to save someone’s life.
When she told me what happened, I saw something different in her. I saw someone who didn’t let her fear prevent her from giving care to someone who needed her. I saw someone who recognized her calling in life for the first time. I think she knows 100% that she will be a nurse someday. I saw someone who had a breakthrough.
Sometimes we feel like life has knocked us down. Sometimes we feel like the job we have isn’t important. Sometimes we may even feel like we aren’t worthy or important. But then we have a breakthrough. That moment when something happens that makes all of the stressful times worth it.
Tonight, when I saw the light in my daughter’s eyes and the enthusiasm for her job, I was so proud. My daughter has come so far in her young life. I could write a book on what she has been through. Maybe I will someday. I write this today to share with others that there is hope. There is hope no matter what your circumstances. But most of all, I write this so that others can see that their breakthrough is just around the corner. All we need to do is have the patience to wait for it.
