Sometimes we become so laser focused on the things that are wrong in our life that we forget to look at the things that are going right. Truthfully, it is easier to dwell on the negative things. It is much easier to get someone to commiserate with you on how life sucks. But when we set our focus on these negative things, we often miss the little blessings that come our way. When we aren't grateful for the positive things in our lives, less blessings come our way. Sometimes we can have such a negative attitude that we can no longer even recognize something positive when it happens. So how do we shift from focusing on the negative to focusing on the positive? Make a conscious decision that you will find something to have gratitude about. I tell my clients to write down three things every day that they are grateful for. Either first thing in the morning or right before bed, write these things down. It doesn't have to be complicated. It can be something as simple as a beautiful flower you saw, or even being grateful for the air that you breathe. But when we do this, our attitude begins to change. Our focus on the negative becomes less intense. And through keeping a gratitude journal we can look back and read tangible evidence that we are blessed. Every day that you have on this Earth is a day to be grateful. Even through tragedy, there are things we can find that we can be grateful for.
