Commit to Kindness

By raising someone else we are lifting them and ourselves at the same time

Today I read a tragic news story.  A 9-year old girl committed suicide.  She had been severely bullied at her school.  And finally, she couldn’t take it anymore.  It hurt my heart to read about this.  She was tormented because she was black and her friend was white.  Her friend would give her a ride to school, which only contributed to her getting harassed.  It is a waste of a precious life.  Unfortunately, these kinds of things are happening more and more.  We have become so divided as a nation that we forget that other people are human beings with feelings.  Something like this should never happen in our world.  But it did.

I believe that we can all do something to change things like this.  And I believe that we have a responsibility to try.  Imagine if every person on this planet did something kind for a complete stranger every day.  Just a spontaneous act.  It doesn’t even have to be a grand gesture.  But if we would all commit to being good to our fellow human beings we could change the negativity in this world.  Perhaps we could even prevent tragedies like this from happening.  Because maybe if this little girl had been shown some kindness she would have had the strength to carry on.  Maybe that kindness would have saved her life.  We can’t bring her back.  That moment has passed.  But perhaps we can all learn a lesson from her death, and at the same time honor her life.  Do something kind for someone. Instead of thinking about yourself, think about what someone else might be going through.  I challenge you to make a commitment to show kindness to others every day.  You may never know when that kindness could be saving someone’s life.
